Incident Exeter High School

Department of Education Media Release

15 May 2013

Deputy Secretary Department of Education

Mr Finch said the incident at Exeter High School this morning was isolated to one science lab and no students were injured.

As a result of a fire in one science lab this morning, the science block was evacuated and the fire brigade was called as a precaution.

No students were injured during this incident, however an ambulance was called, also as a precaution to check any students who were in close proximity to the fire.

Mr Finch said as he understood it, the students were engaged in an approved science experiment.  The fire started when chemicals boiled over and ignited on a hotplate which had accidentally been set too high.  The fire was extinguished immediately and no students were in immediate threat.

The Department of Education has clear and effective procedures in place to respond to these types of incidents in schools.

In this case all appropriate procedures were followed and the school community will be informed via a letter from the Principal this afternoon, he said.
